Excuses Aren’t Welcome When it Comes to Quitting Smoking!

If you’ve been a smoker for any length of time, you’ve given thought to quitting. Why haven’t you? Because you keep making excuses like “Now’s not a good time for me” or “I need to lose some weight first.” You know exactly what I mean because if you haven’t said these words, you know someone who has.

In order to quit the first thing you need to do is to write down exactly what the goal is you are after and come up with all the reasons why you want it. Once you’ve done this also make a note of all the excuses why you can’t achieve your goal.

The act of putting your thoughts to paper gives you clarity. It allows you to sit back and subjectively analyze not only why you want to quit, but to scrutinize all the excuses that are keeping you from doing so. Doing so in this fashion will show you how silly your excuses are in comparison to the goal you are looking to attain.

Have a look at a few of the most often stated excuses and apply them to your list if applicable, however in the end it is your job to list every single excuse as to why you smoke that you can think of.

“Smoking helps to keep me thin.”

The blunt answer to this one is ‘who cares!’ Studies have shown that you are better off to be 70+ pounds overweight than to smoke when it comes to your health, but that’s not a goal you are looking to attain either. The truth is that yes, some people do gain weight after quitting, but this is usually less than twenty pounds and if that frightens you, then this problem can be easily remedied by careful and detailed planning before you quit. Get it through your mind that you are not going to substitute food for cigarettes and if you do, it is healthy foods like celery, carrots and fruit, not candy bars, chips and other ‘comfort food’.

“Smoking makes me happy.”

If that’s the case, then why are you reading an article on quitting smoking? Truth is that I also said this exact same thing. It’s purely a defense mechanism so you can justify why you smoke to other people. The problem is that as I said before, if you say something enough times, eventually you will come to believe it. This is no different. So it’s time to be completely honest with yourself. Do you really enjoy smoking or is it just a lie you’ve come to believe? What do you love about it? Is it the coughing, the breathlessness, the stale smell in your hair, clothes, car and home? What is it that you truly appreciate about what smoking does for you? When you look at it that way and actually write the answers down, I think you’ll find that you really don’t like smoking very much at all.

Now don’t take those statements as vicious or cruel. In no way are they meant to be that way. What they are meant to be is a wake up call – and one that I needed as well. If, as smokers, we keep making excuses as to why we continue the habit, the outcome is that we will remain addicted to the nicotine. And the sooner we realize this reality, the easier quitting will be.

You have what it takes to beat those lies, once and for all.

Nicotine Replacement Therapy, Will it Work For Me?

Nicotine replacement therapy is intended to give your body a low dose of nicotine to help cut back the cravings. Your withdrawal symptoms will not be as severe since small amounts will be put into your system. However nicotine replacement therapy will cause your system to go through withdrawals twice. The first time when you initially quit smoking and the second time when you stop the nicotine replacement therapy. You do not need to go to a doctor to get it.

This can be difficult for many people, especially if its the second time around. You’ll go through a milder form of withdrawals as that familiar edgy feeling comes back. You’re never prepared for that second wave of withdrawal and frequently have a hard time stopping the nicotine replacement therapy. Those that are able to move on are closer to becoming smoke free.

There are several types of nicotine replacement therapy; the most common option used is the patch. Normally you start with a higher dose and gradually work your way down over a 6 to 12 week timeframe. One of the things that should be noted, is the amount of nicotine delivered over the 24 hours is often too much for the body to handle and side effects are very common.

Nausea and cold sweats is a common side effect of the patch. This can be an indication that the dose is to high for your system and you can try a lower dose the next day. It might be a good idea to look into another form of nicotine replacement therapy. Many people have had great success with the patch, but since the human body’s chemistry varies from person to person not everyones body is able to adapt to the patch.

Nicotine replacement therapy comes in various forms, things have come a long way from just being a patch. Another form is nicotine gum, which has improved in taste over the years, you no longer have the pepper taste that would linger in your mouth. Now nicotine gum comes in fruit flavors that you can chew without feeling sick. You can control the dosage according to your own withdrawal symptoms.

Another therapy option is the nicotine lozenge, which you can find in a number of flavors. It delivers a low dose of nicotine to your system as it slowly dissolves in your mouth. You are in control of the dosage which you can adjust according to your withdrawals. Normally you can allow 2 to 4 hours in between tablets. You will experience some type of secondary withdrawal symptoms when you wean yourself off of them, but it’s worth it when you know that in the end you can be smoke free.

Another method of nicotine replacement therapy is the nicotine inhaler. It is a good method for anyone who needs to have something in their hand, a common problem among smokers. The inhaler sends a low dose of nicotine to your system which helps deter the cravings. I do not have first hand experience with the inhaler, but I have heard from several people who have been successful with it.

The majority of nicotine replacement therapy options is available without prescription nowadays and can easily be picked up at your corner drugstore or supermarket. The advantage would be, not having to have the added expense of going to the doctor, but you still have to expect to pay quite a bit even over the counter. And many of the products have an online support system available along with several forums, in which you can receive support from other people who are also using the product and trying to quit.

As mentioned before, some of the side effects of nicotine replacement therapy can range from: a slight headache, insomnia, to more severe symptoms such as nausea, diarrhea or constipation. Some of the side effects tend to be temporary, if they are too much you may want to think about changing your dose or about looking into other smoking cessation options, such as non- nicotine based medication.

Secrets On How To Quit Smoking Without NRT ( Nicotine Replacement Therapy).

Addiction to cigarettes has been a battle that many a smoker has been involved for years now. When the urge to smoke comes like a bout of hunger is when smokers find it hard to resist a smoke. Several solutions have been suggested to help people fight cigarette addiction and one such therapy is NRT (Nicotine Replacement Therapy). NRT helps a person fight addiction by using special bubble-gums and skin patches to fight the urge for nicotine fix, but they have failed in some cases. Over and above fighting any addiction means uprooting the cause and defining a new course for yourself, not temporarily curing a condition. It is possible to quit smoking without NRT; you just need to know how.

Substitute cigarette smoking with an activity that will occupy your mind for long periods of time. You can pick up a sport or even a new hobby to fill in the times when you would normally smoke. If you’re focused enough you will soon realise that you’re not smoking during those times and that it is only afterwards that you will smoke. If you do this for a year you will see your addiction disappear like a wallet filled with money in a poor neighbourhood.

Tell yourself about the dangers of smoking to your health. This technique ultimately tricks your brain into believing that smoking is not necessary and that there are other ways of feeling good without a fix. Listing the hazards will eventually put you in the preventative state of mind that will protect you from dangerous urges. The main reason why people continue to smoke is that they still see the benefits of it.

The next step is making a list of the many benefits of quitting smoking. This will automatically change your frame of mind into disliking the habit of smoking and make you want to quit. Mental and physical well-being; more money to use and a longer life expectancy are one of the benefits that should be on your list. A prolonged smoking habit is because of the way your mind has been trained and programmed to view your needs as being met by a cigarette puff.

Inform your close peers about your intentions to stop smoking. These people must be close enough to you to remind you of your pledge in a hurtful and emotional way. When people like these know about your wishes they will step in as an extra force of military men ready to conquer a city in ruin. And you can also tell them to do or say certain things if they see you smoking, like not talk to you.

Acupuncture is the pressing of tiny needles into the pores of your skin. Acupuncture is a good old Chinese technique which is now used by smokers to help them quit their habit. Acupuncture is known to cut out the craving for nicotine very effectively since it opens up energy reserves and stimulates the release of endorphins, the natural feel good hormones. Acupuncture will give the alternative feeling of pleasure that nicotine extracts through endorphin release.

Your mind needs to be re-conditioned into rejecting the common beliefs upheld by smokers. When a person starts smoking they tell their subconscious mind about the benefits of smoking. With time these beliefs become permanently ingrained into a smokers mind-set. Hypnosis treatment with positive affirmations helps smokers to significantly change the way they perceive smoking.

Lobelia and Passion Flower are herbs that can be taken to kill the urge to smoke. For some people their effect might take too long but others have testified as to the positive results they have reaped through this.

It is a lengthy process to quit smoking. It can take you everything from a few weeks or months to several years. The exact time it takes you to quit can vary, but no matter what it is important that you have some kind of plan to fight against your urge to smoke.

Sooner or later you will feel a strong urge to smoke when you are in the quitting phase. And the way you handle those situations will decide the success factor. When you are prepared with a plan for the urge to smoke, your willpower will be stronger and you can continue your path towards a life without smoking.

Figure out when you typically smoke. Is it after a meal or your daily exercise? If you know when you typically smoke you will be in a better position to fight the urge.

Create a plan of attack. This could be something as simple as a stress ball for your hands, or even just a piece of hard candy to keep your mouth busy. If you really enjoy the taste and feeling of a clean mouth you could try brushing your teeth each time you want to smoke, or suck on a mint flavored candy, which will freshen your breath.

Stay away from all temptations. If you are eating out, find a table in the non smoking area. Never go into a tobacco store and try to limit the time you are together with other smokers. It will be harder to resist the temptation, if you are continuously around smokers and cigarettes.

All smoking instruments must be removed. This is stuff like matches, lighters and ashtrays. Do also get rid of the smell of cigarettes; either by airing the room or using products like Febreeze. The smell of cigarettes can trigger your urge to smoke.

If you are having a place where you normally smoke, it could be a good idea to rearrange your this area. By breaking the routines it will be easier to resist the temptation to smoke. This advice works especially well, if you typically smoke at the same, few places in your home. So if you normally watch television in your favorite chair while you are smoking, try to remove the chair (or the television). Then it will be much easier to resist the temptation to light a cigarette.

Write down your goal to quit smoking. This may seem like a minor detail but in reality, it can go a very long way towards ensuring that you keep your priority to quit smoking at the top of your agenda. If you just tell yourself that you want to quit smoking, you are more likely to cheat and ultimately give into the urge to light up again. If you have written your goal down, you are going to be more likely to actually follow it. This goes for quitting smoking, losing weight, changing your exercise routine or anything else. Written down goals can improve accountability significantly.

Never discount yourself. You will be much more capable of the success if you are certain that you will succeed. Belief is everything. It will help you to be strong when the urge comes. If you are deciding to slip up intentionally, you will find it much harder to get back again. But if you hold on to your devotion to stop smoking you will find it much easier to handle the urge to smoke.

Scientific Proven: A Smoking Cessation Makes You Happier!

It is more fun to be a smoker. This is a widespread myth, which is now being busted by British scientists. In a survey among 879 ex-smokers, approximately 70 per cent answered that they were happier and more satisfied after they have stopped smoking. Many smokers do not want to stop smoking, because they think they will miss something life. Have they first come through the first difficult time as a non smoker, it does not seem that life without tobacco is neither worse nor more sad than life as a smoker. On the contrary, a study shows, published in the journal Nicotine & Tobacco Research. It is hard to find ex smokers who regrets that they have stopped smoking. What matters is to get through the first hard time with withdrawal symptoms.

Out of the 879 ex-smokers, who took part in the survey, almost 70% felt that they were happier after they had quit smoking. Less than 4% were less happy and about 26% felt no change in their mood.

The findings corresponds well with my own experience: people don’t regret that they have stopped smoking, rather they regret that they started.

There is a myth, that if you quit smoking, you might prolong your life, but at the same time you lose some quality of life. But the ex-smokers who have come through it the first time with withdrawal symptoms both have the cake and eat it too: they feel proud to be able to stop, feel free of dependence, has more energy and is meet with recognition for their achievement. They are, in short, on the winner of the team.

Focus on life quality rather than health

Instead of focusing on all the harmful consequences of smoking, moving the focus on the positive aspects of a smoking cessation is by far the most efficient method, when trying to motivate people to quit smoking. Fear and condemnation does not motivate.

Instead, we are developing new methods in which we don’t to focus on diseases and health, but rather on the improved life quality, which freedom from smoke brings. The methods were developed from experiments with advice on smoking cessation for cancer patients. They were excited, partly because they felt that with a smoking cessation they themselves made a difference. Rather than being part of the problem, they were now part of the solution instead.

Better in time

The increased satisfaction is more pronounced, the longer the time that has passed since they stopped smoking. But even with ex-smokers, where the smoking stop was quite new, it was still the majority who feel happier now. Younger ex-smokers was more excited after their cessation than older people. However it did not matter whether they were heavy smokers or only smoked a few cigarettes a day.

Can You Stop Smoking Without NRT?

If I could avoid killing my body and keep smoking I would. I am not a lover of cigarettes mind you, but I do enjoy the taste of cigarettes not to mention the rush I get to my brain. Incidentally did you know that cigarette addiction is centered in your brain? This is why you can stop smoking without NRT.

Nicotine inhaled into your system reaches the brain faster than any other drug except heroin and morphine. Good company right? Each puff you take is another stimulant to your brain. Sure there is a habit factor involved like lighting up, having something to hold in your hand, even going to the store to buy cigarettes. But the real addiction is in your mind, your brain actually.

You can stop biting your finger nails by learning to relax or being aware that you are biting your finger nails. Sometimes if we simply become aware of habit we can simply say stop and we stop. But when your brain is used to a particular sensation and you stop that sensation your brain will not let you rest until it gets that sensation again.

I quit cigarettes because I chose good health over poor health. I confess I was hardly a chain smoker. No I started here and there and stopped here and there.

Then I visited Europe and started smoking again. It is a lot more accepted to smoke in Europe than in the States. In fact it seems like most people in Europe smoke. While in the States it almost seems illegal to smoke with all the bans against smoking in public.

When I returned home I decided to keep on smoking. Not a lot of course. Like before when I was out with my friends drinking or at our monthly poker games. And then I decided to smoke one cigarette when I got home from work at night. I actually would smoke my one cigarette in the bathroom to keep the smoke out of the rest of the house.

In my late thirties I traveled throughout Europe. In that continent smoking is more accepted than in the States where it almost is illegal you would think with all the bans on smoking in public. I started smoking again when I was in Europe and kept it up when I returned home. Nothing regular but I smoked when I was out with my friends having a beer or two. Then I chose to have one cigarette each night after work. During one tough day at work I looked forward to my cigarette that night. I stopped and realized that I was relying on the cigarette.

I chose not to smoke that cigarette when I returned home from work that night. In fact I flushed the rest of my cigarettes. I knew that once the anticipation of the cigarette was enough to calm myself down and accept my tough day at work I was relying on the cigarette to see myself through life. And my brain was at ease knowing that soon it would get its stimulus. I have not smoked since at that was many years ago and I do not plan to go back Stop smoking without NRT by knowing you have to overcome your own mind, your own brain’s desire for a nicotine jolt. You can do it… Say not to your brain.

When You Stop Smoking Without NRT

When you understand what makes quitting smoking so difficult you can figure out how to stop smoking without NRT. Nicotine replacement therapy can be beneficial for some, but for others even just the idea of keeping a constant level of nicotine in the system seems counterintuitive. It doesn’t always work, especially for those that struggle with their commitment from one day to the other, which includes most people who try to quit smoking.

Fortunately, for anyone who wants to get healthy and stop dealing with the chronic issues that surround being addicted to cigarettes there are other options. In today’s world of expensive smokes, restricted smoking areas, and of course rising health care costs there is a need for people to find a way to get through the transition period between smoker and nonsmoker. It’s not easy but with the right help you can become smoke free.

For those who want a different type of stop smoking program, there are many options. Some people do very well with hypnosis and behavioral modification programs. These types of treatment can prevent nicotine from being part of the plan, alter your view of the role that cigarettes play in your life, and help you develop new and improved methods of emotional control.

Hypnosis can help with this quest. In fact, there are plenty of people who have successfully completed hypnosis programs in order to quite smoking without NRT. It often takes several visits to maintain the ability to find alternative ways of stress relief.

There are medicines on the market that are designed specifically to help you overcome your desire to smoke. These rather common medications do have side effects and might not be appropriate for all individuals, but those who have used them successfully are usually able to give up smoking without the same chronic urges reported by those who go cold turkey. These drugs are receptor coaters, meaning that they change the way your brain interprets a cigarette and then tells your body that it isn’t what it wants anymore.

You are going to face some cravings in almost every case, however, there are those who have been able to quit and seem to have little to no craving reactions throughout the process. These cases are rare and there are many studies being done to figure out why these lucky few are not considered addicted to the most addictive substance legally available.

Emotional cravings are much more difficult to get a handle on because they are triggered by emotional responses and years of training. If every time you got upset or stressed for the last ten or fifteen years you grabbed an apple to eat you would develop an emotional reaction to having or not having an apple around when you get stressed. This is where some of the natural products, medications, and non–nicotine replacement therapies can really be beneficial.

Combining various therapies and making sure that you have a new way to cope with stress is often one of the elements missing from NRT. Choosing any combination of programs that works for you is elemental.

Quitting Smoking? Here’s how to get started

If you’re a smoker, there will come a point in your life, and it may even be now, that you will seriously be thinking of quitting. There are any number of reasons why this may be. Perhaps you don’t cherish your lovely smoker’s cough. Perhaps you are becoming more concerned about your health. It doesn’t really matter. The fact is that we know what smoking does to us, how it is affecting our lives and that eventually, we need to stop. But actually moving forward with that plan is sometimes the hardest part.

Perhaps, due to the ever-increasing methods of quitting available nowadays, choosing one has become a more difficult task. The best recommendation I can make here is to analyze each for its pluses and minuses and try to choose one that goes with your current lifestyle. Just by doing a little homework first, finding the method that will be the most successful for you, becomes far easier.

This was very difficult for me, as I had absolutely no clue as to which product would work best for my situation. The first stop I made was to discuss this with my doctor asking which method had the highest success rate, and the least side effects.

As we discussed several of the treatment methods and potential side effects, we also spoke a lot about the psychological issues that pertain to smoking and to be honest I thought that, for myself that this would be one of the most difficult aspects of stopping smoking.

Preparing yourself mentally to quit smoking is not something that I even considered. I always assumed that to quit smoking, you did just that – quit! Maybe go on a wild emotionally charged fit for a week or so when nobody wants to be around you and that’s it, you’re done. I hadn’t even thought about the fact that quitting would necessitate lifelong lifestyle changes.

After speaking with my doctor and choosing a treatment option, she told me to pick a day about two weeks out as my quit day, and use those two weeks to prepare for my new lifestyle. Finding out just how much my life centered around smoking, I’m glad that I had two weeks to prepare myself. Starting with my home I began clearing out the ashtrays, washing all the bedding and curtains, even steam cleaned my carpet to remove any smell, and began to smoke outside.

As I have told everybody looking for my advice on quitting smoking, it is one of the hardest things you will ever do in your life. But it is also one of the most rewarding. Start now. Get your game plan in place – and quit! Nothing will give you more satisfaction.
