Though we carry on deceiving ourselves into thinking that the world fits our ideal vista, the truth will always hit us with a tsunami (literally). Climate change is hard to combat. That is why the more rapid it changes its pace (often faster and to our danger); the more combative we must be in order to prevent it. The facts and figures about landfills is rather shocking. According to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency in 2000, each person in the U.S. was responsible for 4.5 pounds of trash per day. The land required to handle this waste equaled one acre for 10,000 people. On that one acre the trash would need to be piled eight feet high.

Landfills were originally created in the 1950s. They replaced open dumps that had been used previously. Landfills had containment systems that helped to isolate the garbage and minimize the environmental impact and health risk. As trash breaks down, though, there is a natural process that produces, what is called, landfill gases. The gases must be diffused or otherwise extracted as they pose a health risk.

Finding a spot to put a landfill is not simple. There are many restrictions and roadblocks. Landfills are a community issue, so in many cases, people within the community will put up a fight to prevent a landfill from coming to their area. The level of bottled water sales has been growing by something like 7 to 8% each year for the past decade or so. Worldwide consumption is estimated to have doubled between 1997 and 2005.

As far as taste goes there is, again, scant evidence to suggest that bottled water beats tap water. In a blind taste test held in the UK, London tap water secured third place out of a selection of 24 different waters. Over in the USA, a 2007 episode of Penn and Teller (more entertainment than science – but still noteworthy) showed that diners could not differentiate between bottled water and water drawn from a garden hose.

Any cost comparison will be highly dependent upon which brand of bottled water is being used for comparison – but bottled water generally costs several hundred times more, on a per unit basis, than standard tap water.

Whatever way you look at it, whether in terms of environmental impact, health, taste or cost – bottled water doesn’t seem to have much to recommend it. If you really don’t like the taste of the water from your tap then you could always consider some type of filtration system. The cost will be a little higher than tap water, but very much less than bottled water.
