Why gynecomastia is common in boys younger than 17: Gynecomastia is a condition that produces “man boobs” in men. The chest area stores abnormally large amounts of fat tissue, making the man appear to have breasts like a woman. This condition is common in teenage boys. In many cases, it goes away within a couple of years.

It is unknown the exact cause of gynecomastia. Each individual case is unique. But it is safe to say that in young boys, it is almost always hormonal. The nipples become puffy and large, the breast grows abnormally large, etc. Studies show that 30-60% of young boys suffer from this condition. Most recover from it.

Boys that are overweight may have more fat tissue around the breast area. If they are chubby all over, it might appear to look natural to have excessive fat on the chest too. But as boys drop weight and the breasts still remain large, it could be a problem. Talk with a physician to find out the best treatment.

Boys of that age are already confused enough. He should not have to worry about having “man boobs” and suffer even more. Other kids can be so cruel. They will make fun of him and shun him. This can do horrific things to a young child. His self image and self esteem will be ruined.

Losing weight can help shrink the fat around the breast. But sometimes, it does not help. Wait a few years before considering surgery. Sometimes, the hormonal changes are all part of the cycle of puberty. All boys go through it. When he reaches maturity, his hormones will get balanced and the problem of having breasts will clear on its own. But if it does not, then it may be time for considering surgery. But be patient and wait it out first. No guy wants to have man breasts. But sometimes the surgery may be totally unnecessary when the problem is going to go away on its own anyhow.
